It has been shown many instances over in research that a mother or father who is involved in their child's education has a beneficial effect. It's reflected in improved grades and test scores, strong attendance, a greater rate of completing their studies, greater graduation rates, better behaviors and gained confidence in the child, and the child will gain confidence and will be more interested in participating in after school activities. Send the message early in your child's education that your home is a concerned and active supporter of their studying.
The best way to encourage good study habits at home is structure. But what is too much or not enough? If we're too lax and expect too little, your child may become complacent or unmotivated. If we're too rigid and strict, it can cause unnecessary pressure or cause your child to feel unable to live up to your expectations.
So what's the very best way to help develop a better and more positive learning environment for your child at home?
Help your child create a work area where they can study without being interrupted. It will be easier for your child to get their work done when they have a secluded study area away from interruption. If your child likes to do their work at a desk in your home that is easily accessed by other family members, make sure that family members understand that the desk is not to be used during the students study time. Make sure your child has enough resources readily available and study materials available and that their study place is well lit. No matter where it is located, ensure the area is peaceful and that your child can study and work uninterrupted.
Agree on a normal time for studying. To help your child make school work a routine habit, schedule a set time each day for homework. Possibly breaking study time up into smaller amounts would work better for your child than one long study period. Work with your child to learn what works best for them. Be sure your child has time to relax between the time they arrive home from school and before they sit down to start their homework so that they have time to unwind from their school day.
